Wasaga Beach: beach areas, parking and water quality

Wasaga Beach is a long Georgian Bay sand beach shared by the Town of Wasaga Beach and Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. The two follow different rules for parking, dogs and alcohol, so know which beach area you are standing on. This guide sorts out the areas, the permits and the water-quality notices.

Quick answer: the beach areas

The Town’s beach page describes Allenwood Beach at the eastern edge, New Wasaga Beach, Beach Area 1 ("The Main End", with shops, restaurants and a boat launch), Beach Area 2, Beach Areas 3 to 5 and Beach Area 6 at the western edge.[7] The provincial park’s own page lists four park beach areas, 3 to 6:[8]

  • Beach Area 3 (22nd Street North): the only park location where dogs are allowed on the beach, in a specific on-leash section.
  • Beach Area 4 (24th Street North): sandy beach and shallow water, a large playground and a bike path.
  • Beach Area 5 (Sunnidale Road North and Linda Lane): two comfort stations, a large playground and the park store.
  • Beach Area 6 (Shore Lane between 48th and 50th streets): the smallest, with limited capacity, an unpaved lot that blowing sand can make hard to drive, and no picnic area.

The Ontario Parks blog, updated in August 2026, still describes eight park beach areas, including Beach Areas 1 and 2 and New Wasaga. The park page and the Town page now treat 1, 2 and New Wasaga as Town areas, so follow the posted signs.[9]

Day-use permits and parking

  • Book ahead for Beach Areas 3 to 6. Daily vehicle permits can be booked up to five days in advance, online or by phone, and a reservation is the only way to secure entry. Without one, you risk being turned away when the park reaches daily capacity.[10] Ontario Parks releases advance permits at 7 am Eastern, and one permit covers one passenger vehicle.[11]
  • Permits do not transfer between park beach areas or to Town parking areas.[10]
  • Town parking: the Town’s page notes parking at Allenwood Beach, New Wasaga Beach and Beach Areas 1 and 2. Park permits are not valid in Town lots.[7][10]
  • No driving on the beach. Motor vehicles must park in a designated lot, and the Town says fines can reach $25,000.[12]

Lifeguards

Neither the park’s pages nor the Town’s beach page lists lifeguards. Supervise children and non-swimmers at every beach area.[13] Personal flotation devices can be borrowed for a refundable deposit at the gatehouses of Beach Areas 3 to 6.[14]

Dogs

  • Provincial park: dogs are allowed on the beach only in the designated section of Beach Area 3. Beach Areas 4 and 5 have on-leash dog-friendly picnic areas, and their beaches and water are pet-free, as is Beach Area 6.[8] Leashes must be no longer than 2 m, and the set fine for a dog on a beach or in a swimming area is $95.[15]
  • Town rules: at Allenwood Beach and New Wasaga Beach, dogs are allowed outside restricted hours. From May through September they are not permitted from 9 am to 6 pm. At Beach Areas 1 and 2, dogs are allowed on designated pathways only, not on the sand. Service animals are permitted.[16]
  • The Town’s page also calls Beach Area 3 the only area where pets are welcome on the sand, which does not match its Allenwood rule, so read the signs on arrival.[16]

Rules at a glance

  • Town beach areas: alcohol, open fires, glass, smoking and vaping, fireworks and flying lanterns are not permitted. Gas barbecues are allowed at Allenwood and New Wasaga, and in designated picnic areas at Beach Areas 1 and 2; charcoal, wood and pellet devices are not. Enclosed tents are not permitted; umbrellas, open-sided canopies and shade structures without sidewalls up to 100 square feet are.[17]
  • Provincial park: the park’s rules page allows adults 19 and over to drink in most areas of provincial parks, except clearly marked alcohol-free areas. The Ontario Parks Wasaga blog says open alcohol is not permitted anywhere on the beach or in the park, so treat the park beaches as alcohol-free. Fireworks are prohibited, and fires are allowed only in designated places.[15][18] The park’s beach areas have charcoal disposal pits near the parking lots.[8]
  • Accessible Mobi-Mats: the Town lists them at Beach Areas 2, 4 and 5. The park lists them at Beach Areas 3, 4 and 5, from mid-June to Thanksgiving.[7][8]

Water quality

The Town tests water quality regularly. Under 200 E. coli per 100 mL is listed as "All clear"; over 200 means "Exercise caution", and advisories lift when levels return to normal. Closures for serious risks such as a sewage or chemical spill are rare. The Town links to Ontario Parks for provincial park beach data.[19]

The Simcoe Muskoka health unit says results come about 24 hours after sampling, and it advises waiting 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain before swimming. Its 2026 monitoring has ended and resumes in the third or fourth week of June 2027, once the water warms up.[20]

Piping plovers

The Town asks visitors to follow signs and stay out of Piping Plover Critical Habitat Areas.[21] The Ontario Parks blog says a fence goes up 50 m around each plover nest.[22]

Fact-check 2026-11-03 (independent): original 33 rows: 17 confirmed, 9 corrected, 7 removed. Main problem: park facts came from the Ontario Parks blog, which conflicts with the park’s own pages (four park beach areas, 3 to 6, not eight; Beach Areas 1 and 2 and New Wasaga are Town areas). Removed as unsupported by the park page: $21 permit price, 8 am to 10 pm hours, over 1 million visitors, peak times, Beach Areas 1 to 6 advance booking, park-only alcohol ban as a park rule (kept as a labelled blog statement), Ploverland closure in Beach Area 1. Ontario Parks rules now cite the park’s own rules and facilities pages. Rules Check box matches the township dataset and MAT status file. Stray @R1 directive line removed.
