Fishing below the dams

Both lakes are in Fisheries Management Zone 17, the zone that covers the Trent-Severn, the Kawartha Lakes and the Crowe River. The Zone 17 summary closes two short river stretches at this end of the system. The Rosedale River is closed from the Trent-Severn dam at Rosedale to Cameron Lake. The Fenelon River at Fenelon Falls is closed from the Trent-Severn dam to the second power line, 1 km downstream. Both sanctuaries run from January 1 to the Friday after the second Saturday in May, and again from November 16 to December 31. Seasons and limits by species are on the Zone 17 page; we do not copy them. Most anglers need an Outdoors Card and a fishing licence. The City’s own fishing page sends anglers to the Province for licences and rules.

Boating Cameron and Sturgeon

Anyone driving a power boat on these lakes needs proof of competency, most often the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. In Ontario, federal rules limit power and electric boats to 10 km/h within 30 metres of shore. The limit lifts for a boat towing a skier on a straight course away from shore, and it does not apply in canals, buoyed channels or rivers less than 100 m wide. Ontario asks boaters to clean, drain and dry the hull, motor and trailer between lakes to stop invasive species. Secchi depth and phosphorus readings from Lake Partner Program sites are on the Province’s Lake Partner map.

Fenelon Falls and the waterway

Fenelon Falls is on the Trent-Severn Waterway, the 386 km Parks Canada route between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay.>>> The navigation season runs from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, mid-May to mid-October. Check the Parks Canada hours and fees pages before a lock day.

Before you book

Ask the host which ramp they use and whether the cottage dock suits your boat’s draft. The City’s fishing page still marks Beach Park "closed for the 2021 season", while its launch page lists the ramp, so call the City before you plan around Beach Park. Lake area, depth and species were not on a primary page we could read; Fish ON-Line has them.
