Quick answer
Ontario Parks lists a 105 km canoe route of interconnected lakes, gorges and rapids from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay, the route used by Indigenous peoples, French explorers, fur traders and voyageurs.[7]
Visitor centre
The French River Visitor Centre is on Settlers Road and has a "Voices of the River" exhibit.[8] The park lists 1 boat launch and 1 park store.[9] Check the park’s page for current hours, because the facility hours table we saw was empty.[10]
Backcountry camping
The park has 291 backcountry campsites and 1 backcountry access point. Backcountry reservations are made online, and the season runs April 24 to October 18, 2026.[11] Ontario Parks says all 291 sites and portages are reached by boat and clearly marked, every site has a firepit and most have box privies. Site-specific reservations open up to five months before arrival, and permits are also sold at the French River Visitor Centre when sites are available.[18] The park lists 150 interior earth pit toilets and 4 vault privies, and no showers, car camping or public Wi-Fi.[12]
Day use and activities
The page lists no day-use fees.[13] Activities listed are boating, canoeing, hiking, hunting, swimming, whitewater paddling and fishing.[14] Swimming is allowed, but there are no designated beaches. Hunting is allowed except in the nature reserve zone.[19]
Recollet Falls Trail
The Recollet Falls Trail is 3 km and moderate, a linear trail of 1.5 km each way. It starts at the Visitor Centre, follows the edge of the French River Gorge and ends at Recollet Falls.[20]
Paddling routes
Otter Bay is the only access point inside the park. Other access is through private businesses or public boat launches, and their parking and ramp fees are extra. In spring flooding the river can be 4 m higher than at low flow, and Recollet Falls has no passable portage during high flows. For current water flows, call the park at 705-857-1630 (May to October).[21] Routes on the activities page include:[22]
- Restoule/French River: 72 km, 4 to 6 days, from Restoule Provincial Park. Restoule permits are bought separately.
- Okikendawt Island Loop: 42 km, 3 to 5 days, from Riverview Cottages or Otter Bay. Camping on reserve land is prohibited.
- 14 Mile Island loop: 62 km, 3 to 4 days, past Recollet Falls. It can be shortened to 48 km by leaving out Cantin Island.
- Figure 8 loop: 36 km, 3 days, from Hartley Bay Marina.
- Bustard Islands: 62 km return from Key River, 4 to 6 days.
Fishing
Ontario Parks names walleye, smallmouth bass and northern pike among the species in the river, and says over 50 lodges and marinas operate along it.[15] Rules, seasons and limits come from the Ontario fishing regulations summary. Read it before you fish.
