Quick answer
Lifeguards patrol the Main Beach from mid-June to Labour Day.[6] Expect rules on tents, alcohol, dogs and sports. Read them before you pack the car.
Parking
The Municipality’s 2026 parking guide (marked "last revised July 2024" on the document, so confirm rates before you go) lists these rates:[7]
- Main Beach and North Beach lots (90 Main Street West): $8 per hour or $40 per day, paid 8 am to 6 pm. Lot hours are 6 am to 11 pm, with no overnight parking.[8]
- Main Street meters: $3 per hour, two-hour maximum, 8 am to 6 pm daily.[9]
- River Road: $3 per hour, two-hour maximum, 8 am to 6 pm.[10]
- Municipal Drive Lot (20 Municipal Drive): free until 3 am, with room for boat trailers and RVs. Overnight parking needs a pass.[11]
- Overnight parking in designated areas: $10, bought through HotSpot.[12]
Pay with the HotSpot app or at a Pay & Display machine, and check the sign for your zone. Pay tickets online at lambtonshores.ca/parking or at the Municipal Administration Building, 9577 Port Franks Road, Thedford.[13]
Lifeguards and warning flags
Lifeguards are certified through the Lifesaving Society. The 2026 season ran from mid-June to Labour Day weekend, with coverage from June 15 of Monday to Thursday 12 pm to 6 pm, Friday 12 pm to 7 pm, and weekends and holidays 11 am to 7 pm.[14]
Beach Patrol is on duty whenever a flag is flying: green means good conditions with no unusual hazards, yellow means moderate conditions and swimming with caution, and red means danger, swimming not advised. No flag means no officer on duty.[15]
Rip currents. The Municipality lists these warning signs: gaps where waves do not break regularly, darker choppy channels, and foam, seaweed or suspended sand. If caught, stay calm, stand and wade if you can, hold any flotation device, and never swim straight against the current. Swim parallel to shore until you are out of it, then head in.[16] Jumping and diving from the pier is prohibited because it can create structural currents.[17]
What you can bring
- Dogs: not permitted on the Main Beach during the beach season, May 1 to September 30. Leashed dogs may use the North and South beaches from 6 am to 8 am and from 8 pm to 11 pm.[18]
- No alcohol, glass or barbecues. The beach is smoke- and vape-free, and littering has zero tolerance.[19]
- Shade: tents, sun shelters and canopies are prohibited. Single-pole umbrellas up to 2.4 m (8 ft) across are allowed, upright only.[20] Umbrellas must be at least 3 m (10 ft) apart and must not block the lifeguards’ view.[21]
- Inflatables: only single- and two-person inflatables.[22]
- Sports: not allowed on the Main Beach in July and August, including Frisbee, football, volleyball, soccer and spikeball.[23]
Washrooms and accessibility
The Beach House is open daily from 9 am to 10 pm until Labour Day. The automatic washroom at the North Beach lot is open year-round, 6 am to 11 pm, and hours can change without notice.[24] The beach has accessible mats, an accessible splash pad and a boardwalk. Free lifejacket lending is at the Information Booth when it is open, and free amphibious wheelchair lending is available when the booth is open and lifeguards are on duty.[25]
Water quality
Lambton Public Health samples the water for E. coli, excessive algae and other contaminants, and posts warnings when E. coli exceeds provincial guidelines. Check status by texting BEACH to 226-909-3003, or call 519-383-3816.[26]
Pinery Provincial Park next door
Ontario Parks says Pinery has 10 km of Lake Huron shoreline and no lifeguards on its beaches. See our Pinery guide.[27]
