Fishing closures and lake trout rules

The Zone 15 summary closes two stretches at Haliburton village from March 16 to the Friday before the third Saturday in May: the Drag River between Bailey’s Dam and Head Lake, and Head Lake itself from the Drag River west to the western edge of the Highway 121 bridge, including the water under the bridge. Drag Lake and Twelve Mile Lake both appear in the Zone 15 lake trout exceptions, so read their entries for the season and size limits before you target trout. Kashagawigamog Lake is not named on the Zone 15 page. We do not restate limits here. Most anglers need an Outdoors Card and a fishing licence, and Fish ON-Line maps species and rules for each lake.

Boating the chain

Anyone at the wheel of a power boat on the chain needs proof of competency, most often the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. In Ontario the federal rule is 10 km/h within 30 metres of shore for power and electric boats, unless you are towing a skier on a straight line out from shore or are in a canal, buoyed channel or river under 100 m wide. Ontario asks boaters to clean, drain and dry the boat and trailer before moving between lakes, and the Lake Partner map shows Secchi depth and phosphorus readings for Lake Partner Program sites.

Head Lake at the town dock

Head Lake’s Town Docks are at 127 Highland Street in Haliburton, with a concrete launch, garbage, docking and a picnic shelter. Washrooms are at the Haliburton Welcome Centre in Head Lake Park. Parking at the launch is at a premium, and Rotary Beach has ample parking a short walk away through the park paths. The township also points boaters to the observation dock at the museum, which leads into the Haliburton Sculpture Forest.

Marinas on the chain

The municipal lake guide lists Haliburton RPM on Grass Lake at 5122 County Road 21 and Harpers Marine on Kashagawigamog Lake at 3572 County Road 21. It gives no size, depth or species for Kashagawigamog. Confirm each marina’s season on its own site.

Lake association

The municipal guide lists the Drag and Spruce Lakes Property Owners Association for Drag Lake.

Before you book

Ask the host which launch they use and whether the cottage is on Head Lake, Kashagawigamog or another lake in the chain. Twelve Mile Lake has no entry on the Dysart et al access list, so ask the host how guests reach the water there.
