Quick answer
Pick a day with calm water, bring shade that fits the umbrella rules, and leave the dog, the cooler of beer and the barbecue at the cottage. There is no lifeguard, and the County’s list of prohibited items is long.[7]
Rules on the beach
Prohibited at any time:[8]
- Fires and barbecues of any kind
- Dogs, except clearly identifiable service dogs
- Glass containers and littering
- Smoking or vaping tobacco or cannabis
- Tents
- Consuming, serving or selling alcohol
- Public urination or defecation
Umbrellas: no more than 2.3 m high, with a shade diameter of no more than 2.7 m. They need one centre pole, and no part of the material may touch the sand.[9]
Parking
The Norfolk County page for the beach does not list parking fees or dates.[10] The County’s most recent paid-parking notice we found is from June 12 2024 and is marked archived, so confirm current details with Norfolk County. That notice listed paid parking from June 15 to Labour Day at $4 per hour, 10 am to 6 pm daily, in Port Dover at the Clinton Street lot, the Lift Bridge lot and Harbour Street near the museum. Payment was through the HotSpot app or QR codes, cash was not accepted, and a resident permit was $35 per vehicle.[11] A vehicle parked without proper payment in a paid zone faced a $75 fine in that notice.[12]
Water hazards
Lake Erie has no lifeguard here, so you are responsible for your own water safety. The Lifesaving Society notes that wind-generated waves on the Great Lakes can create dangerous currents, including rip currents around structures and sandbars. If you are caught, flip onto your back, float, then follow a clear path to rescue, such as swimming sideways across the current.[13] Central Elgin’s safety page adds that large waves can trigger rip currents and that piers can create structural currents, so jumping or diving from a pier is dangerous.[14] Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.[15]
We did not find a Norfolk County page listing water-quality results for Port Dover, so check with the local public health unit before you swim.
Other beaches in Norfolk
Norfolk County’s beach page also covers Long Point and Turkey Point. Long Point has eight beach access points, from Pike Lane to Sandy Lane, and the County points visitors to the provincial park for the beach itself. High water levels can significantly reduce the beach. Turkey Point has a long, shallow beach with many sand bars, and it extends into cottage areas, so follow parking signs and respect privacy.[16] See our Turkey Point guide and Long Point Provincial Park guide.
