Sauble Beach: parking, water and the season

Sauble Beach is a long stretch of sand on Lake Huron in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. Most visitors plan around two things: where to park and what the beach rules allow. This guide covers both, plus water testing and the parks next door.

Quick answer: which part of the beach suits you

The Town’s shoreline runs north of 7th Street to Groves Point, and Saugeen First Nation runs Saugeen Beach beside it.[6] The two owners set their own rules. The Town’s by-laws do not apply to the Saugeen First Nation portion, so check the posted signs when you cross from one stretch to the other.[7]

Parking and fees

Paid parking applies from June 1 to Labour Day, 8 am to 5 pm. The rate is $7 per hour or $30 per day.[8]

  • How to pay: the Passport Parking Canada app or website, or the machines on Lakeshore Boulevard North. Machines take exact change in coins and debit or credit cards, not bills. Convenience fees apply on the Passport site and app.[9]
  • No prepaying: you can buy an hourly or daily pass only on the day you park, during paid hours.[10]
  • Season passes: $50 per vehicle for residents and $200 for non-residents, valid June 1 to Labour Day. Passes come through Town Hall or the Clerk’s Department, not the machines.[11]
  • Accessible parking: drivers with a valid accessible parking permit do not pay in designated accessible spaces.[12]
  • Big vehicles: oversized vehicles cannot park on Lakeshore Boulevard North. The Town suggests the Sauble Community Centre lot and the Poechman Parking Lot.[13]
  • Motorcycles: parking is between First Street North and Paisley Lane on Lakeshore Boulevard North.[14]

The Town says fines can change, so read the signs and the Paid Parking By-law before you leave a car.[15]

Beach rules

The Town’s Sauble Beach By-law prohibits fires, motorized vehicles (including scooters and e-bikes), camping, building structures, alcohol, smoking and vaping, cooking or warming devices, and selling items on its beach. Four-sided tents and tents you cannot see through are not allowed; sun canopies and see-through three-sided tents are. Garbage goes in the cans provided.[16]

Dogs: animals, including dogs, are not allowed on the beach, and dogs are specifically banned from June 1 to Labour Day. Service animals are allowed; carry paperwork from an authorized health care provider to show By-Law Officers.[17] Dogs that need a run can use the fenced leash-free areas at Bannister Park and the Sauble Beach Community Centre, 30 Community Centre Drive, or at the Oliphant ball diamond, 1579 Sauble Falls Parkway. Washrooms or porta potties there are open May to October.[18]

The Town has no jurisdiction in the water, so the beach rules are not enforced there.[19]

Water quality

Grey Bruce Public Health tests municipally owned public beaches for E. coli about monthly from June to September, taking at least five samples at each beach.[20] A posting means recent samples exceeded the provincial guideline of 200 E. coli per 100 mL (geometric mean), and the sign advises people not to swim. Postings lift once results return to guideline levels, which can take a few days.[21] The August 4 2026 sample at Sauble Beach North passed and the beach was not posted.[22]

Results lag by a day or two. Public Health advises avoiding swimming 24 to 48 hours after heavy rainfall, and looking for cloudy water, large flocks of waterfowl, dead fish, algae or scum.[23]

Waves and rip currents

The Great Lakes have no significant tides, but wind-generated waves can create dangerous currents, including rip currents around sandbars and structures. The Lifesaving Society’s advice if you are caught is "Flip, Float and Follow": flip onto your back, float to conserve energy, then follow a clear path to rescue, such as swimming sideways across the current or calling and waving for help.[24] Check the marine and weather forecast before you go in.

Sauble Falls Provincial Park

Sauble Falls Provincial Park, 1400 Sauble Falls Road, is 20.24 hectares with 154 campsites. Its 2026 season ran April 24 to November 1. It has a playground, a historic waterfall and the end of the Rankin River canoe route, and the Ontario Parks page describes spring and fall runs of rainbow trout and Chinook salmon.[25] Book day use online through Ontario Parks.[26]

Crowds and timing

Paid parking runs from June 1 to Labour Day. Outside those dates the Town’s other parking rules still apply, including 2-hour limits where posted and accessible spaces only with a valid permit.[29]
