Stony Lake: lake guide

Stony Lake is a Trent-Severn lake with public access in two townships, North Kawartha and Douro-Dummer. The municipalities spell it Stoney Lake on their boating pages, and we keep Stony as the common name. The Ontario fishing regulations name it at the foot of Burleigh Falls and Perry’s Creek. This guide lists the public wharves and launches the municipalities publish.

Public access

North Kawartha lists one municipal launch on Stoney Lake. Douro-Dummer lists McCracken’s Landing as a launch and Crowe’s Landing as a wharf. Douro-Dummer says its wharves and launches open by the end of May, weather permitting.

North Kawartha maintains two municipal launches in the township, one on Chandos Lake and the Stoney Lake wharf at Woodview. The township does not publish fees, parking or rules for the wharf; call the office at 705-656-4445 before you rely on it.

Fishing at Burleigh Falls

Stony Lake is in Fisheries Management Zone 17. The Zone 17 summary closes Burleigh Falls and Perry’s Creek, from the Trent-Severn dam down to Stony Lake, from January 1 to the Friday after the second Saturday in May and from November 16 to December 31. Check that window before you cast below the falls in spring or late fall. Seasons and catch limits by species are on the Zone 17 page, and we do not restate them. Most anglers need an Outdoors Card and a fishing licence, and Fish ON-Line maps species and rules for each lake.

Boating on Stony Lake

Stony Lake boaters at the helm of a power boat need proof of competency; the Pleasure Craft Operator Card is the most common form. Ontario waters carry a federal 10 km/h limit within 30 metres of shore for power and electric boats. A boat towing a skier straight out from shore is exempt, and so are canals, buoyed channels and rivers under 100 m wide. Douro-Dummer links boaters to the federal Office of Boating Safety and to its own blue-green algae page. To keep invasive species out, Ontario asks you to clean the boat and trailer, drain the water and dry the hull before launching on another lake. The Lake Partner map posts Secchi depth and phosphorus results for Lake Partner Program sites.

Douro-Dummer wharves

Douro-Dummer says it is home to Clear Lake, Katchewanooka Lake, Stoney Lake, White Lake and the Indian River, all connected by the Trent-Severn Waterway. Its map lists two municipal wharves on Stoney Lake, Crowe’s Landing and McCracken’s Landing, and three public launches: McCracken’s Landing, Back Dam Park in Warsaw, and Douro South Park at 201 Douro Second Line, which is for kayaks and canoes only. Back Dam Park is on the Indian River, and the township gives two street numbers for it on the same page (209 and 902 Rock Road). All wharves and launches open by the end of May, weather permitting. The township does not list fees.

Parks near the lake

Petroglyphs Provincial Park is at 2249 Northey’s Bay Road in Woodview, the same community as the North Kawartha wharf. Warsaw Caves Conservation Area is in Douro-Dummer. See Petroglyphs, Warsaw Caves and Kawartha Highlands.

Before you book

Ask the host whether the cottage is reached by road or by water from McCracken’s Landing or the Woodview wharf, and whether the dock suits your boat. Lake area, depth and species were not on a primary page we could read, so use Fish ON-Line for them.
