Quick answer: nearest hospital

For Haliburton and the lakes around it, the hospital is HHHS at 7199 Gelert Road. HHHS also lists a Minden site. The HHHS page does not say whether the emergency department runs 24 hours, so confirm that with the hospital. In an emergency, call 911.

Health advice

For non-urgent health advice, HHHS tells people to call 811 to reach a registered nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; the toll-free TTY line is 1-866-797-0007. In a medical emergency, HHHS says to call 911 immediately. Urgent care is not mentioned on the HHHS page we read, so we do not list it.

Groceries and the LCBO

We list store locations only through official locators. Use the LCBO store locator and The Beer Store locator to find the nearest outlet. For internet and mobile coverage, use the National Broadband Map from ISED and the CRTC; its mobile layer shows road segments with mobile service. Ask your host about the cottage’s own connection.

Burn rules

Rules vary by municipality, so check the one your cottage sits in.

  • Dysart et al (Haliburton village area): open air burn permits must be approved by the fire department. The page lists a $150 non-refundable processing fee. Expect five business days at minimum to receive site approval for your burning dates. It says: "During a fire ban, no burning is permitted. Burn permits will not be issued." The township asks you to contact the fire department before you complete the application; the municipal office number is 705-457-1740.
  • Minden Hills: the fire season runs April 1 to October 31. Night burning is allowed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Daytime burning between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. is not allowed during fire season.

Other townships in the region set their own rules, and we did not confirm them for this guide.

Marine supplies and gas

The Dysart et al lake guide names Kennisis Lake Marina and Storage at 1076 Wilkinson Road, Harpers Marine on Kashagawigamog Lake and Dockside Fuel near Kennisis. Confirm each business’s season on its own site before you plan a fuel stop.

Garbage and recycling

We did not confirm landfill or transfer station hours for Haliburton County municipalities for this guide. Ask your host which site serves the cottage, and check the municipality’s website for hours and fees.

Recreation and community buildings

Dysart et al’s A.J. LaRue Arena has a single ice pad. The township says the ice "is usually put in mid-June" for the summer season, stays in for fall and winter, and comes out after Easter weekend. Open skates such as public skating are on its schedule. Minden Hills lists a Recreation Complex, community centres, beaches and boat launches.

Before you arrive

Save the hospital number and 811 in your phone. Ask your host which municipality the cottage sits in, because Dysart et al and Minden Hills set different burn rules, and neither is the same as a provincial park’s. If you plan a campfire, check whether a permit is needed before the day you want it, since Dysart et al asks for at least five business days for site approval. Look up the nearest LCBO and grocery on your drive in, and confirm internet and cell coverage at the address.
