Beaches

  • Papineau Beach: Papineau Lake (about 831 ha, maximum depth about 64 m, about 25% Crown land around it). Southeast side, about 40 minutes from Bancroft. A small beach with lots of shallow area, which the municipality calls great for families with little kids. Secluded, with no facilities. Day use only, no overnight camping. The lake’s large Davis Island can be seen from almost anywhere on the water.
  • Hinterland Beach: the municipality lists this small beach although it is in Madawaska Valley. It is an access point to Kamaniskeg Lake from the South Hinterland Beach. Sandy, shallow entry, secluded, day use only, no facilities. Water quality is not monitored regularly, so swimmers go at their own risk.
  • Diamond Lake Beach: Diamond Lake (about 166 ha, maximum depth about 25 m) in Herschel Township, about 20 minutes west of Bancroft. Sandy shoreline, a public beach and a public boat launch. Fish include lake trout, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. About 74 properties line the lake, and it is 60% Crown land.

Fishing

The municipality says its lakes and rivers offer angling in all four seasons, including for what it calls the unique-to-our-area Jewel Lake Trout, as well as bass. Licences are available from the Ministry and local vendors, which the page names as Canadian Tire, Linkie’s General Store and Gas Bar in Lake St. Peter, and Makin’ Waves Marine. Fisheries Management Zone 15 includes Bancroft. See Bancroft Land O’ Lakes fishing.

Burn rules

From November 1 to March 31, day and night burning is permitted. From April 1 to October 31, night burning only is permitted. The Open-Air Fire By-law (2020-047) governs open burning. The page does not state permit or fee rules, so call 613-338-2811. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Forest Fire Information Map shows active fires, fire danger and restricted fire zones.

Health care
