Ontario Parks describes the water at Port Burwell as shallow, sandy and very warm.[24] The north shore also has waves, structures that create currents, and beaches with and without lifeguards. This guide compares what Central Elgin and Norfolk County say about their beaches, so you know what to expect before you book a stay.
Quick answer
- Look for a flag and a lifeguard before you swim. Port Stanley’s Main Beach has seasonal lifeguards from July through September. Port Dover’s beach has no lifeguard on duty.[1][2]
- Wind and waves change conditions quickly. Large waves can trigger rip currents, and piers create structural currents.[3]
- Dogs are not permitted on Central Elgin beaches at any time, or on Port Dover’s beach.[4][5]

Flags and lifeguards
Port Stanley’s flag system: green means good conditions, yellow means moderate conditions and swimming with caution, red means swimming is not advised, and double red means no swimming is permitted. No flag means no lifeguards on duty.[11] Lightning clears the beach for 30 minutes after the last strike or thunder.[12]
Rip currents and piers
Rip currents are fast-moving channels of water that move away from shore. They form when waves push water toward shore and the built-up water breaks back through, and they can also form around permanent structures such as piers or suddenly after large waves. Central Elgin says they are highly prevalent in the Great Lakes, including Lake Erie.[13]
If you are caught, do not fight the current. Swim parallel to shore to get out of it, then angle toward shore. If you cannot escape, float or tread water and call or wave for help.[14] The Lifesaving Society’s version is "Flip, Float and Follow": flip on your back, float to conserve energy, then follow a clear path to rescue.[15] Jumping or diving from a pier is prohibited at Port Stanley and is dangerous, because it puts swimmers and first responders at risk.[16]
Boaters
On Port Stanley’s beaches, personal watercraft and motorized boats must stay outside designated swimming areas.[17] Everyone aboard a boat must wear a lifejacket, and powerboat operators need a Pleasure Craft Licence.[18] Boat wakes can overwhelm nearby swimmers and small craft.[19]
Water testing
Southwestern Public Health posts results and swimming advisories for Port Stanley’s Erie Rest, Little Beach and Main Beach. An E. coli level above provincial standards triggers an advisory, and the beach stays open for walking and sunbathing. Sampling for 2026 has ended and resumes in 2027.[20] Norfolk County’s beach page does not cover water quality, so check with the local public health unit for Port Dover, Turkey Point and Long Point results.[21]
High water and storms
Norfolk County notes that high water levels can significantly reduce the beach at Long Point.[22] We did not retrieve Environment Canada marine forecast pages or Lake Erie storm statistics, so this guide does not state storm frequency or timing. Check the forecast, and the County’s tip to check the weather, before every beach day.[23]
Parking and rules
Parking differs by beach and year. See the Port Stanley beach guide for 2026 rates and the Port Dover beach guide for the County’s by-law.
