Quick answer

Hike the Fire Tower Trail to the Temagami Fire Tower on Caribou Mountain, just minutes from downtown. Camp or swim at Finlayson Point Provincial Park on the lake. The Municipality’s marina is at 7 Lakeshore Drive; its season runs from the long weekend in May to October 31, and the maximum boat size is 10 feet wide by 26 feet long.

Things to do in town

The Municipality describes the Temagami Train Station, built in the early 1900s and restored, as home to the Temagami Information Centre run by the Temagami & District Chamber of Commerce. The waiting area and washrooms are open to the public free of charge during business hours. The Temagami Community Market was set up by the Municipality in 2009 and runs on Saturdays in the summer, with a Christmas market later in the year.

The Temagami Fire Tower was built in the 1930s as a fire lookout; the current steel structure dates from 1951 and stands on Caribou Mountain. The Municipality lists a Fire Tower Trail with eleven numbered points. For longer hikes, it points to Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park. It also describes White Bear Forest, with old-growth red and white pine, some over 300 years old, and a network of hiking trails with interpretive signs.

On the water

The Municipality says Temagami offers more than 4,800 km of interconnected lakes, rivers and portage routes and that Lake Temagami holds more than a thousand islands. It lists boating, houseboating, canoeing, fishing and ATVing among the local activities. Check the municipal marina page before you plan around its fees, because the fee chart posted there is dated 2020.

Finlayson Point Provincial Park

Ontario Parks describes Finlayson Point as a peninsula on Lake Temagami, a gateway to Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater, with a hike to the Caribou Mountain lookout and fire tower. The park is 47 ha, established in 1963, and its 2026 operating dates were May 15 to October 12. Campsites suit tents through large trailers, and many have electrical hook-ups. Comfort stations and laundry are close by.

Ontario Parks recommends two natural sand beaches, marked with buoys and with gradual drop-offs. There are no lifeguards, and pets are not permitted on the beaches. Power boats are allowed on Lake Temagami and many nearby lakes. Ontario Parks counts more than 2,000 lakes in the Temagami region, most of them linked by portages into a 2,400 km network of routes, and says hundreds of small lakes are easy to reach from Highway 11 or gravel roads if the Northeast Arm is too windy. The Temagami Cabin sleeps six, with two bedrooms and a kitchenette. Pets and smoking are not allowed in the cabin, and reservations in the high season run Saturday to Friday for six nights, per the park page.

Fishing

Ontario Parks lists lake trout, lake whitefish, northern pike, rock bass, smallmouth bass, walleye and yellow perch among the sport fish of Lake Temagami. The Municipality adds that many lakes in the area are reached only by canoe or floatplane. Confirm the zone’s seasons and limits in the current Ontario fishing regulations summary.
