Quick answer

Reserve your daily vehicle permit in advance, because the Falls Viewing Area has automated gates that scan the barcode on your advance permit. Fish near the falls in spring and fall, but the area of the falls itself is closed to fishing year-round.

The falls and the fish

Ontario Parks says the falls were once used to power a timber mill and a generating station, and now mark the end of the Rankin River canoe route. Rainbow trout and Chinook salmon run upstream in spring and fall, and visitors can watch them struggle over each ledge. Anglers will find the areas next to the falls productive for trout and salmon in those seasons, but the area of the falls is closed to fishing year-round, so check the park’s signs and the current fishing regulations before you cast.

Canoeing and boating

Canoe rentals are on the north side of the Sauble River near the parking lot, and the park also rents paddle boats and kayaks next to the day-use area. A canoe launch at the portage on the north side of the falls gives access to a paddle up the Sauble River. Many paddle from Sauble Falls to County Road 8. Ontario Parks says that downstream trip is 10 km and takes about 3.5 hours, through farmland and steep sand dunes, with the Rankin River joining just above the rental and bridge. Ask park staff for advice on paddling the river.

Camping

Sauble Falls has electrical sites in two campgrounds, and the park has three campgrounds in all, each with a comfort station with showers. West Campground is radio-free. There are two group camping areas, one for 15 to 20 people and one for 30 to 40, both within five minutes’ drive of the beach. Barrier-free showers and flush toilets are in each campground. One dual-head Level 2 EV charging station sits at the west comfort stations. The park has laundry and one picnic shelter.

Trails and wildlife

The Sauble Trail is 2.5 km, takes about 2 hours and is easy. It runs mostly through a red pine plantation and across ancient sand dunes, with an interpretive leaflet about forest management. Bicycles are not allowed on it. Cycling is allowed on park roads, and Ontario Parks suggests riding to the beach. Osprey are often seen at the mouth of the Sauble River and nest in the Isaac Lake area.

Park rules

Pets must be on a leash of no more than 2 metres and are not permitted in the swimming area or on the beach. Adults 19 and over may have alcohol in most areas of operating provincial parks. Fireworks are prohibited, off-road vehicles are not permitted, a campsite holds at most six people and the longest campground stay is 23 consecutive nights.
