Quick answer

Buy your daily vehicle permit up to five days ahead. Walk or bike the paved Rondeau Road and the Harrison Trail, swim from one of the eleven beach accesses and bring a leash if you travel with a dog, because Beach Access 11 is the only designated dog beach.

Beaches and swimming

Ontario Parks lists eleven beach accesses leading to 11 km of sandy beach on the Lake Erie side. It asks visitors not to move driftwood, because the dunes shelter species at risk, including the endangered Fowler’s Toad and the Common Five-lined Skink. Rondeau Bay gives more sheltered swimming than the lake. Floating beach wheelchairs can be borrowed from the Visitor Centre. Beach Access 11 is the designated Dog Beach: dogs must be on a leash on the beach and under control in the water.

Trails and cycling

The park lists three cycling trails totalling 38.5 km. Walking trails include:

  • Spice Bush Trail: 1.5 km loop, easy.
  • Black Oak Trail: 1.4 km loop, easy.
  • Tulip Tree Trail: 1.2 km loop, mostly boardwalk, easy. The park says to look for the endangered Prothonotary Warbler on this trail in May.
  • Marsh Trail: 7.2 km one way along Rondeau Bay.
  • Harrison Trail: 8 km one way, a former gravel road to the lighthouse, closed to vehicles.
  • Rondeau Road: 2 km of paved road closed to vehicles for most of the year, used for biking, walking and rollerblading.
  • South Point Trail: 8 km loop, with the middle part washed out when we checked.

Birding

The park says 334 bird species have been recorded, 134 of them breeding. Rondeau is a spring and fall stopover for migrating songbirds and waterfowl, and the bay hosts thousands of ducks and Tundra Swans in spring and fall. The park mentions a springtime Festival of Flight.

Boating and fishing

There is no lakeside boat launch or dock in the park. A launch on Rondeau Bay by the Main Office suits watercraft 19 feet and under, and boats cannot be left moored there. Larger watercraft ramps and slips are nearby in Erieau. Ontario Parks lists salmon, walleye and perch in Lake Erie and largemouth bass, perch, sunfish, crappie, catfish and pike in the bay. Ice fishing is permitted when conditions are safe. Children and new anglers can borrow a rod, reel and tackle through OFAH Tackleshare at the Main Office, and life jackets can be borrowed at the Main Gate.

Facilities

The Visitor Centre, 5 km south of the campground, has displays, live animals and a birding window, and is open daily from spring to late fall; call for hours. The Park Store sells basic groceries and has a snack bar. Three comfort stations in the campground have flush toilets and showers, with laundry at the North and South stations, and a year-round comfort station with flush toilets is beside the Park Store. Five picnic shelters can be reserved.

Park rules

Pets must be on a leash of no more than 2 metres and are not permitted in the swimming area or on the beach, except at the designated dog beach. Adults 19 and over may have alcohol in most areas of operating provincial parks. Fireworks are prohibited, off-road vehicles are not permitted, a campsite holds at most six people and the longest campground stay is 23 consecutive nights.
