The Grotto and Bruce Peninsula National Park: parking and reservations

Rocky limestone cliffs above clear turquoise water with a distant boat

Parks Canada calls the Grotto and Cyprus Lake area one of the most popular attractions on the Bruce Peninsula, with thousands of visitors hiking to the Grotto each summer day.[8] You cannot drive up and decide. Parks Canada controls access with parking reservations, and the rules are strict. Read them before you plan the day.

Quick answer

From May 1 to October 31 every vehicle needs a reservation for the Grotto and Cyprus Lake area. When parking is fully booked, there is no Grotto access at that time. Parks Canada does not recommend travelling to the park without a confirmed reservation.[6]

Time slots

At the Grotto and Cyprus Lake area, slots are four hours: 8 am to 12 pm, 9 am to 1 pm, 12 to 4 pm, 1 to 5 pm, 4 to 8 pm and 5 to 9 pm. Access is from Cyprus Lake Road, and walking on that road is not allowed.[7] The park’s FAQ page lists the same slots without the 8 am one, so confirm the current list when you book.[8]

Halfway Log Dump uses 6-hour slots (7 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 8 pm). Reservations are required June 19 to September 7. From September 8 to June 18 it is first-come, first-served with self-registration at the lot.[9]

Booking rules that catch people out

  • One slot per location per day. You can book up to three vehicles for the same slot and location with one credit card, and each reservation is tied to an occupant.[10]
  • No changes. Modifications are not allowed. You can cancel at least two days ahead, then book again.[11] The same applies to the date, slot or reservation holder.[12]
  • Arrive on time. There is no early access, so arrive no more than 15 minutes before your slot. Check in at least two hours before your slot ends or the reservation is forfeited.[13]
  • No reselling. A resold reservation is void.[14]
  • Bring proof. Confirmation and matching photo ID can be requested at entry. Print the confirmation, because cell signal in the park is unreliable.[15]
  • Drop-offs. Driving in to drop off visitors is not allowed. Each vehicle needs a valid permit for each area.[16]
  • Accessible parking needs a valid government-issued accessibility permit.[17]

What it costs

Your total is admission, plus parking, plus a reservation fee.[18] The Parks Canada fee page lists these amounts, with regular fees applying from September 8, 2026 (confirm current rates when you book):[19]

  • Adult admission $10.00; senior $8.75; youth 6 to 17 free; family or group (up to seven people in one vehicle) $19.50.[20]
  • Parking $17.50 per vehicle per day.[21]
  • Reservation fee: $3.50 online or $5.50 by phone, for each booking, change or cancellation.[22]
  • Parks Canada Discovery Pass: adult $83.50, senior $71.50, family or group $167.50.[23]

Free admission and discounted camping with the Parks Canada and Canada Strong Pass ended September 7 2026. Youth 17 and under are free, but free admission does not secure entry: parking fees still apply and reservations are still required.[24] Pass holders can have the vehicle permit and day-use permit fees refunded at the Cyprus Lake Campground office on the day of the visit. The reservation fee is not refunded.[25]

If you are camping

Campers at Cyprus Lake Campground can hike to the Grotto from their site.[26] If you want to park in the main Grotto lot or the Halfway Log Dump lot, you need a reservation for that lot.[27] Pedestrians are not permitted on Cyprus Lake Road.[28]

Without a reservation

The first-come lots at the Visitor Centre and Singing Sands fill early and do not give Grotto access. When parking lots are full, there is no other access to the park.[29] Plan to arrive with at least two hours left in your slot.[30]

Park rules

  • Pets must be on a leash at all times, and cannot be left unattended in a vehicle.[31]
  • All Parks Canada places are no-drone zones for recreational use.[32]
  • Fires are allowed only in designated locations and must be attended. Campfires cannot be lit or kept after 11 pm and must be out by midnight.[33]
  • Bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited on all trails unless authorised.[34]

Access and trails

The trail to the Grotto shoreline is a wide crushed-gravel path of about a kilometre with a few hills, and the round trip takes about an hour. It ends on rocky limestone cliffs, so wear sturdy footwear. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible, because a rocky section near the shoreline prevents access.[35] There is no food, water or garbage service at the shoreline, open alcohol is not permitted, and charcoal barbecues are banned there.[35] The Halfway Log Dump trail is wide and fairly flat but is also not wheelchair or stroller accessible, for the same reason.[35]

Other places to visit

If the Grotto slots are gone, Little Cove needs a 4-hour reservation from May 15 to September 15 and is managed by the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. It has no garbage facilities, so take everything out with you.[36] The Municipality lists Dunks Bay, Sandy Beach and Lion’s Head Beach as municipal beaches.[37] See Things to do in Tobermory for the village, Fathom Five and the ferry.
